The Andean mountain cat has ashy-grey fur, a grey head and rounded ears. Its nose and lips are black, surrounded by white, and two dark brown lines run from the corners of the eyes across the cheeks. It has black spots on the forelegs, yellowish-brown blotches on the flanks, and a long, bushy tail with six to nine dark rings. Juveniles are darker, with smaller markings. It looks very like the pampas cat, which makes the two hard to tell apart in the field, but its skull is larger than that of the pampas cat or the domestic cat. (Wikipedia, general species account)

This is a cat of high, arid, rocky country, where deep valleys split its habitat into fragments. Mountain viscachas make up about 94% of the biomass it eats, and in one study both this cat and the pampas cat were seen most often on moonless nights (Wikipedia, general species account). In daytime observations, three of four cats were hunting in viscacha colonies (Handbook of the Mammals of the World). Mating is thought to take place in July and August, based on local sightings of pairs with litters, and kittens have been seen in April and October; a litter usually holds one or two young, born in spring and summer (Wikipedia, general species account). Habitat loss and degradation, hunting and disease are the threats named (Wikipedia, general species account).

Bolivia is part of the species' range. GBIF distribution lists place it in south-western Bolivia (Handbook of the Mammals of the World), and Wikipedia records the cat at elevations above 4000m in Bolivia, Chile and central Peru. It is protected in every country of its range, and the Andean Cat Alliance, formed in 2003 by representatives from Argentina, Bolivia, Peru and Chile, supports research and conservation of the species (Wikipedia, general species account).
